Staff Engineer, Automation

Our Mission Healthie is an AI-Native, ONC Certified EHR for modern outpatient healthcare. Healthie is proud to power clinically excellent healthcare for over 40,000 providers who deliver clinically excellent healthcare - longitudinal and collaboratively, with patient and provider experiences at the center. Both healthcare and technology are undergoing unparalleled industry innovation, and it’s incredible to see the momentum - from consumers, from providers, and from reimbursement for this type of healthcare - grow exponentially. We provide the powerful infrastructure every care delivery organization needs. On the surface this includes EHR, Scheduling, Engagement, Billing, Data, and much more. Underneath the iceberg are thousands of configurations, settings, widgets, automations, and limitless capabilities because we are an API-first platform. Our fully brandable platform makes it easy for clinics and organizations of any size to scale and never reach a limit. Today, over 3 billion API calls are made to Healthie every month, as thousands of organizations who work with more than 21 million patients in total, rely on Healthie to deliver clinically excellent healthcare in over 35 specialties, from behavioral healthcare to complex chronic care management and personalized medicine. We believe in the power of technology to improve access to healthcare and we’re building the rails that make this a reality. We work fast and with quality because we provide business-critical, healthcare-critical software that clinicians and patients need for a better healthcare system. We’re customer-obsessed, operate with lightning-fast processes and responses, and always share our product roadmap publicly- so customers can see what we’re building, and remain relentlessly focused on how care gets delivered. Healthie is backed by leading investors, and while we’ve $42M raised to date, more importantly, we operate with fiscal responsibility and have been profitable for more than half of our time as a company. We know that building an ONC-Certified EHR is a lifetime’s body of work, and we are here to build for our customers forever. Learn more at https://www.gethealthie.com/ About the role Automate by Healthie gives our customers the ability to set up deterministic, and ultimately agentic, workflows that reduce clicks and streamline operations for clinical care delivery at scale. A simple example is allowing customers to set up a rule “when X happens in a client’s record, do Y” but the potential applications across the surface area of our platform are endless. You’ll be a founding engineer on this high-velocity, high-impact team that builds, runs, and consistently improves our automations product: the event pipeline, the triggers and actions, and the interface customers use to configure them. You’re a fit for this role if you have deep customer empathy (product engineering) and enjoy spending time sifting through customer pain points, identifying trends, and implementing opportunities for customers to automate complex clinical and operational processes across the platform. What You’ll Do Build and expand Healthie’s customer-facing workflow automation capabilities, enabling healthcare organizations to automate operational and clinical workflows directly within the Healthie platform. Develop new automation triggers and actions across core product areas, including scheduling, charting, billing, messaging, and patient engagement, helping customers reduce manual work and streamline care delivery. Engineer reliable, scalable automation infrastructure, including retries, idempotency, error handling, failure visibility, and clear customer-facing feedback when automated workflows don’t execute as expected. Ship an intuitive, scalable, and error-free Automation builder that enables Healthie customers to create, configure, and manage workflows without requiring technical expertise. Identify and implement opportunities to leverage AI, LLM APIs, and intelligent workflow orchestration to deliver smarter, more adaptive automation capabilities that improve customer efficiency and operational outcomes. Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Product, Security, and Operations to ensure automation capabilities are secure, scalable, and seamlessly integrated across the Healthie platform. Own the end-to-end technical delivery of customer-facing automation features, from architecture and development through deployment, monitoring, and optimization, while establishing reusable frameworks, engineering standards, and best practices. About you 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant hands-on experience designing and implementing production-grade automation solutions. Experience building and running event-driven or workflow systems in production, including on-call responsibility for them. Comfort working in Rails or a similar backend framework. Experience handling the unglamorous parts of integration work: webhooks, queues, duplicate events, rate limits, and partial failures. Ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-engineers, in writing or in person. Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, and modern CI/CD tooling. Familiarity with workflow orchestration, job scheduling, event-driven architectures, and automation frameworks. Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and background processing systems such as Redis or Sidekiq. Demonstrated ability to independently identify opportunities, design technical solutions, and deliver measurable improvements. Strong troubleshooting skills and an understanding of observability, system reliability, and production operations. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and nontechnical teams. Nice to Have Experience working in healthcare technology, EHR platforms, or other highly regulated environments. Familiarity with HIPAA, healthcare data privacy, and secure automation practices. Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, and GraphQL. Experience with AI-powered development tools, LLM APIs, or building agentic workflow automation tools. Experience automating healthcare workflows involving clinical operations, billing, claims processing, or patient engagement.
