Provoke Solutions
Data Modeller (MS Fabric)
About this role
Turn complex data into clarity. Build models that businesses can trust. We're a global technology consultancy helping organisations solve complex challenges through modern software solutions, data platforms, AI and intelligent automation. We're looking for an experienced Data Modeller to join our NZ team. Whether you're an established contractor or looking for your next permanent opportunity, we're open to finding the right fit. This is an opportunity to work on meaningful client engagements, shaping how organisations structure, govern and use their data to make better decisions. We're not just looking for someone who can write SQL or build tables. We want someone who understands how to turn complex data into reliable, well-designed models that deliver real business value. What does the role look like? You'll spend your time doing what great modellers do: making complex information logical, consistent and genuinely useful. Working across Microsoft Fabric engagements, you'll turn source data and business requirements into governed, analytics-ready Gold models. One day you might be designing fact and dimension tables, the next resolving data inconsistencies, defining reconciliation rules or collaborating with analysts to ensure reporting delivers accurate, meaningful insights. You'll work with engineers, BI teams and client stakeholders to understand how data is used, challenge existing structures and design models that are scalable, maintainable and fit for purpose. This isn't about simply recreating legacy databases in a new platform. We want someone who can think critically about data design, make sound modelling decisions and confidently explain the reasoning behind them. You'll have the support of experienced colleagues, but we value people who take ownership, ask the right questions and bring solutions to the table. What we're looking for Strong dimensional modelling experience is essential. This is a modelling-first role, not a general data engineering or Power BI development position. Technically, you'll bring:
- Proven experience designing dimensional and star-schema models, ideally using Kimball methodologies in production environments.
- Strong SQL skills, including data validation, reconciliation and transformation.
- Deep understanding of fact grain, dimensions, keys, relationships, SCD Type 1/2 and fact table patterns.
- Experience translating source mappings and data requirements into governed, analytics-ready models.
- Experience designing data structures for BI and reporting, ideally including Power BI Semantic Models.
- Understanding of data quality, lineage, governance and reconciliation as part of good model design. Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, Gold Lakehouses, Delta Lake and Direct Lake is highly desirable. Familiarity with Spark SQL, PySpark and modern CI/CD practices would also be beneficial. Beyond the technical skills... We're a consultancy, and how you work matters just as much as what you know. You'll be someone who:
- Communicates confidently: Builds trust with clients and can explain complex data concepts in practical, understandable terms.
- Takes ownership: Makes sound decisions, follows through and delivers quality outcomes without constant direction.
- Thinks commercially: Understands the business purpose behind the data, not just the technical design.
- Challenges constructively: Asks good questions, identifies gaps and isn't afraid to recommend a better approach.
